Nobel Minds: Innovation, Ethics and Diversity

  • By stepping into the shoes of the Nobel Prize Committee, students will develop critical thinking skills around the ethics of selection and the importance of diversity in research.
  • Students will gain a deeper understanding of the barriers that exist for underrepresented groups and will come up with practical solutions to address these inequities.
  • Through collaborative problem-solving, they will realise the importance of creating inclusive environments to foster innovation and recognise global talent.
  • Students will gain a broad perspective on how diversity, innovation, and ethics intersect in global research, preparing them to think critically and creatively across different disciplines.

This enrichment program provides an excellent opportunity for cross-curricular learning by blending topics from Science, Geography, History, English, Maths, Technology, and Ethics.

Suitable for a half day enrichment program (Years 7-11).

The Nobel Impact: From Diversity to Discovery

  • By examining the 2024 Nobel Prize-winning work of Cambridge University alumni Hinton, Hassabis, and Jumper, students will understand how their breakthroughs in AI—such as deep learning, AlphaFold, and reinforcement learning—impact our everyday lives, from healthcare advancements to smarter technology.
  • Students will gain insight into AI's ability to solve complex global problems, and how its potential to drive innovation can transform multiple sectors, from medicine to climate change, showcasing the far-reaching benefits of AI when developed thoughtfully.
  • Through this exploration, students will recognise the crucial role of diversity and inclusion in AI research, understanding how diverse perspectives are essential for creating fair, effective, and socially responsible AI solutions that have a positive societal impact.

Cross-curricular across Science, Computing, Engineering.

Suitable for one-off lessons or a half day enrichment program (Years 7-11).

The Nobel Games: Discovering Innovation

  • A mix of different hands-on activities and games can be put together to learn about the 2024 Nobel Prize winning work of Cambridge University alumni Hinton, Hassabis and Jumper.
  • For learning about AI and the basics of neural networks in Computing: "Smart Card Game", "Guess the Number Game", "Neural Network Adventure".
  • For learning about how predicting protein structures can be used for improving global health: "Balloon Virus Showdown", "Future of Food".

Suitable for one-off lessons or put together for a half-day enrichment program.

More 'Nobel Games' activities below that can be also used for extended homework tasks.

  • Students design and create an engaging board game that helps players learn about protein structure, vaccine development, and related topics based upon the 2024 Nobel Prize winning work in Chemistry.
  • By creating a path to a "Vaccine Lab," students will create ways for players to encounter various challenges and opportunities related to key concepts in science.
  • The game will encourage learning while promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Suitable for a half day enrichment program or an extended homework task.

  • Students will learn how specific medicines target proteins in the body to treat various conditions, gaining insight into the molecular processes behind drug action.
  • Students will explore how combining different medicines affects protein targets and pathways, and whether such combinations can improve efficacy or reduce side effects.
  • By researching specific drugs and creating visual representations of their findings, students will develop their ability to analyse complex information and present it clearly.
  • Students will grasp the concept of personalised medicine, understanding how treatments can be tailored to individuals based on their unique biological makeup for better results.

Suitable for a half day enrichment program or an extended homework task.
