Nici Hoyle
Mathematician. Engineer. Scientist. Coder. Artist. Teacher.
That's quite a mouthful.
But in truth my career path to date has covered a lot of bases.
- Maths degree, Oxford University.
- PhD in Computational Engineering.
- Designed cutting-edge aerodynamics for an F1 team, optimising engine air intakes for peak performance.
- Applied my engineering expertise to medical research, using my code to study human carotid artery shapes to help uncover stroke triggers.
- 10 years in the film industry creating physics-based visual effects, for major films like Harry Potter, The Dark Knight, Captain America: The First Avenger, Fast and Furious 6 (check out IMDB for more).
- Made the decision to sacrifice what was arguably the coolest job in the world to get to know my children.
- Fell into teaching and became Head of Engineering, pioneering the subject as a core curriculum offering from Year 3 upwards.
- 8 years teaching Engineering, Science, Maths and Computing focused on KS3, specialising in helping students develop real-world problem-solving skills and relate curriculum to the everyday to enhance learning.
- In collaboration with IAPS, published a complete and comprehensive Engineering scheme of work for Years 3-8.
- Outreach to teach enrichment GCSE and A-level maths to show how topics are relevant to the real world.
- Trained teachers from over 100 schools nationwide to develop resources and relate curriculum topics to developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking in students.
- Tailored STEM enrichment provider for Year 7 through to Year 11.
- Presented seminars on Taking Leadership of Your Learning at IAPS Deputy Heads conference.
